Sunderman Prof. Russell McCutcheon inspires connections through music

Through his role as Director of Bands, Sunderman Conservatory of Music Prof. Russell McCutcheon conducts the Wind Symphony, the Symphony Band, and oversees the Bullets Marching Band. His involvement creates a unique opportunity to forge connections with Gettysburg College students.

“In music, the connections come in a number of ways: the classroom, the rehearsal hall, as advisors and as mentors, and through student organizations,” McCutcheon said. “I’m able to see how a student starts in their first year and how they continue to grow.”

The Conservatory is open to all students at Gettysburg College—those who wish to pursue a music major and minor and those who do not. By participating in experiences at the Conservatory, students develop and deepen enduring skills that will serve them well beyond their music endeavors.

McCutcheon shared how students within the Conservatory strengthen skills such as teamwork and leadership. He acknowledged how participation in the Conservatory is one aspect of the College’s expansive education.

“Teamwork is critical to the success of being a musician. We are constantly playing with other people and ensuring that our part contributes to that of the whole. Musicians are also natural leaders, and we build leadership in our students through responsibility,” McCutcheon explained. “Sunderman Conservatory is part of Gettysburg College—we’re not a separate thing. When you come here, even as a music major, you’re still fully engaged in the life of Gettysburg and experiencing a true liberal arts education.”

McCutcheon underscored the collaborative environment that exists at Gettysburg College and how such an environment fosters meaningful relationships across campus.

“I really value the environment that we have between students, faculty, and staff. People care about each other and want to encourage a strong community of learning,” McCutcheon shared. “Gettysburg is a great place to be actively engaged in this idea of being a student and working together with faculty—faculty are partners in student learning.”
