Times of Israel: ‘He Would Have Hidden Jews in Nazi Germany: Charles ‘Buz’ Myers’
Jewish Studies and Interdisciplinary Studies Prof. Stephen Stern writes a column for the Times of Israel, reflecting on the person who inspired him to teach at Gettysburg College—retiring Religious Studies Prof. Charles ‘Buz’ Myers. Furthermore, Stern shares how Myers has dedicated his four decades at Gettysburg to helping ensure living Jewish voices aren’t absent from academic discussions or curriculums, and more broadly, caring about all people—having a particularly big heart for his students.

The Gettysburg Times: ‘Issue of glass recycling heating up’
Environmental studies majors Tessa McDonald ’23 and Adriana Quinonez ’24 contributed to a Gettysburg Times column, shining a light on the reality of glass recycling in Adams County. In addition to noting that there are currently no drop-off sites for glass recycling in the county, they shared: “If you live in Adams County and your waste hauler collects glass for recycling, it’s ending up at the landfill, possibly as road base.”
WHYY: ‘Pennsylvania needs rental assistance and eviction diversion programs’
Africana Studies Prof. Tyeshia Redden, who specializes in housing, social policy, and urban governance failures, was quoted in a WHYY article about the housing crisis, particularly as it relates to rental properties. The article referenced a new study by the Keystone Research Center and Pennsylvania Budget and Policy Center that looks at housing affordability before the start of the COVID-19 pandemic and as it currently exists.

The Academic Minute: ‘Adolescence, Sleep, and School’
Distinguished alumna Mary Carskadon ’69 was featured in a podcast episode by The Academic Minute. Carskadon is a renowned researcher on sleep who serves as director of the Chronobiology and Sleep Research Laboratory at Bradley Hospital and is a professor of psychiatry and human behavior at the Alpert Medical School. In the episode, Carskadon speaks about changing sleep patterns during early adolescence, particularly analyzing how COVID-19 affected sleep during the height of the pandemic.
History Channel: ‘How President Buchanan Deepened Divisions Over Slavery Before the Civil War’
History Prof. Michael Birkner was quoted in a History Channel piece on James Buchanan’s presidential shortcomings, which has led many historians to consistently rank him as one of the worst U.S. presidents. In the article, Birkner shared that in addition to being sympathetic to southern slaveholders, Buchanan wasn’t very in tune with popular opinion in the north. “He is not the right man at the right time to be president of the United States,” Birkner said.
