Pacific Grove, CA - Carmel Pine Cone Newspaper, Features Editor
The Carmel Pine Cone is a hyperlocal weekly newspaper (also available as a free pdf) that has been in business for more than 100 years. It is independently owned and operated and uses no outside news services (Reuters, AP, etc.) for its stories. We employ 14 full- and part-time employees, as well as six to eight freelancers. As the features editor, I edit 32 special sections annually, including some about international events like the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance and the Carmel Bach Festival, as well as topical issues like healthcare, pet care, women in business, etc. I also oversee weekly features including personal profiles, artist profiles, and food and wine. I source and write articles, solicit and edit freelancers' work, solicit and take photographs and assist in getting the paper ready for the printer on Wednesdays and Thursdays. An extern will be able to help work on stories and, if the occasion presents itself and they are interested, will be able to report a story under their own byline, with a photo credit if applicable. They will observe the assembly of the weekly paper and take part in proofreading. About one-half of the work is done outside of the office, either in the field or from my home. Developing curiosity and learning to ask good questions is a huge part of successful reporting. I can help with the latter, but the curiosity has to come from the extern. Sensitive/easily triggered people may have difficulty with some subject matter. Depending upon dates of externship, there may be some attendance at local events to report and photograph them.
Host Bio: B.A. Gettysburg College, Political Science; M.A. Psychology, Regent University; 4 years of active duty military (U.S. Army) as a personnel/administration officer. Work experience includes outside sales, database management, marketing, and 20 years in private postsecondary vocational education; four years as a freelance writer, concurrent with education experience; nine years in current job. I have covered a wide range of events and topics, including healthcare, real estate, food and wine and profiles of local people.

As an Ecological Landscape Designer I am advocating sustainable landscape designs and practices for all my clients. My greatest challenge is to change the homogenous narrative of what the aspirational landscape should look like. I advise my clients to work with nature and provide habitat and biotic corridors for insects and wildlife. Engage best management practices and designs to ensuring clean watersheds, resilient and biodiverse ecosystems. Students will work directly with me in the field going on site visits, participating in landscape management and installations. They will take plant inventories, site measurements, develop site specific plant lists, research, develop plans of action, identify invasive species, learn horticultural techniques, native plant landscape management, visit nurseries, estimating and budging techniques, and work with not-for-profit organizations. The native plant, ecological landscape design field is a fast growing industry that is helping to address various environmental, social and cultural issues as we face climate change challenges. It is applicable to students in many types of areas of studies including Biology, Art, Business, Sociology, Economics, Chemistry, etc. I would like to be able to introduce students to this exciting field especially as we face the dramatic climate issues currently and in the coming decades.
Host Bio: I am a New York based ecological landscape designer with more than 17 years’ experience focusing on environmentally sustainable and ecologically responsible designs. My designs have been implemented in Westchester, Putnam, Duchess, and Fairfield counties. Most of my projects involve restorative practices incorporating native plant communities, permaculture practices, and water management. I currently work on several projects including a large institutional campus, not-for-profit organizations, and various designs for homeowners incorporating pollinator gardens, woodland edge and riparian edge mitigations, rain gardens, no-mow lawns, and invasive plant management strategies. I am on the North Salem Conservation Advisory Council, a land steward for the North Salem Open Land Foundation, and a Bedford 2030 Rooted Solutions Coach. I received my landscape design certification from the Institute for Ecosystem Studies (IES) in Millbrook, NY, which is now known as the Cary Institute. My NGICP designation was awarded by the Water Environment Federation. The Master Woodland Manager Certification was awarded by the State of Connecticut Forest and Park Association. I have attended conferences, classes, seminars, workshops, and programs led by Larry Weiner, Patrick Cullina, Doug Tallamy, Trevor Smith, and the Ecological Landscape Alliance. I have a BA from Gettysburg College in Sociology and minor in Biology.

We all work together closely in a supportive and positive environment. On surgery days, the student will be shadowing surgeries and learning about anesthesia protocols, anesthetic monitoring, and watching surgical procedures, which mainly involve spays and neuters though depending on the schedule there may be other procedures performed during this time (laceration repairs, other abdominal surgeries, amputations, etc.).
