Gettysburg students studying globally on an Affiliated program will be charged Tuition and a Global Study Fee by Gettysburg College which is comparable to the comprehensive cost of a semester at Gettysburg College. These charges are the same regardless which global study program the student attends, and the charges will be billed to the student’s account. The Tuition and Global Study Fee are announced each year in April for the following academic year.
Gettysburg College charges home school tuition for all Affiliated global study programs, and in turn pays tuition to the program abroad. Gettysburg students earn Gettysburg credit and grades for their global study courses as well as having a wide range of program types to select from. Each global study course is reviewed by our faculty to determine credit-worthiness at Gettysburg, thereby enabling these courses to count for major and minor credit and fulfill Gettysburg Curriculum requirements; students also receive grades towards the Gettysburg degree. It also ensures that programs are selected based on academic goals and personal fit.
The Global Study Fee includes room, board, and global medical insurance at the program site, and gives students continued access to a wide variety of on-campus resources while studying globally including academic and Individual Education Accommodation Plan (IEAP) advising, library resources, Gettysburg e-mail and other electronic resources and tools, and pre-departure health and counseling advice including the availability for Health and Counseling Services to consult with your global study program as needed. Global study students will receive a deposit credit in the amount paid to the program upon acceptance. In addition, eligible students studying on international global study programs may also receive a flight credit on their student account.
Gettysburg students who receive financial aid will, in most cases, continue to receive that aid (with the exception of work study) while studying globally. Students are strongly encouraged to schedule an appointment with Financial Aid to see how their aid will be impacted by global study.

All students pay Gettysburg College Tuition and the Global Study Fee for Affiliated Programs. Gettysburg then pays for the following costs associated with your global study program:
- Tuition Gettysburg College pays for all required academic costs for a full load of courses on your global study program. All mandatory field trips or excursions are included, but course fees, supplemental housing fees, optional field trips, or excursions are your responsibility.
- Housing During the academic period housing in a double or triple room or with a family is included. Students who choose to live in a single room or other accommodations for which there is a supplemental fee will be billed the difference between the cost of a regular room and the chosen housing
- Board During the academic period Gettysburg College pays for the equivalent of a "full meal plan" at your program site. This could be three meals a day with a host family, a meal plan in a residence hall, a meal adjustment to your Gettysburg student account so you can purchase and prepare food, or some combination of these options. Gettysburg College does not pay for meals you choose to eat out at restaurants so take full advantage of the meal arrangements included with your program.
- Global Medical Insurance & Healix Gettysburg’s Global Insurance includes coverage for medical evacuation and repatriation, international health insurance, support through Healix, and other benefits.
- Support Services, Orientation Materials and Advising All students will have access to advising services while they are studying globally via the Center for Global Education. Pre-Departure Handbooks and other orientation materials will be given to all students, and questions pertaining to Gettysburg College issues can be addressed by this office while students are studying globally.
- Students studying on Affiliated Programs will also receive support in the credit-transfer process for academic coursework completed while participating in the Affiliated program as a part of the Global Study Fee for Affiliated Programs, Pre-departure advising and course pre-approval process; Pre-departure programming and materials; Processing of Federal Financial Aid; Pre-departure services through Counseling Services, and the availability of Counseling Services to consult with your global study program if needed; Pre-departure services through Academic Advising and Student Support Services, including supplying Individual Education Accommodation Plans (IEAP) for the global study program if needed; Access to Gettysburg email, Moodle and all electronic resources and tools; Access to Gettysburg library’s holdings, its staff, and its research capabilities; Communication with the host program regarding logistical issues and student life matters; Access to Gettysburg College on-line course registration for the semester following the student’s time studying globally; Access to housing placement for the semester following the student’s time studying globally; and Re-Entry programming and materials.
- Flight Allowance Credit: Gettysburg College recognizes that airfare is an added expense for global study and grants a Flight Allowance Credit to most students who study internationally. The amount of this credit is based on the world regions in which you will be studying. Students should not book one-way tickets for departure and return, as this is generally more costly and less secure. Many countries also require round trip tickets as a requirement for entry. The Flight Allowance Credit will be credited to your Student Account. However, all students must pay for their flight prior to receiving this credit since flight arrangements must be made several months in advance. Note: Depending on where in the region you are flying the Flight Allowance may not cover all of your flight costs (see: Will there be additional costs associated with global study through an Affiliated program?).
Estimated Flight Allowance
***Note that students studying for an academic year or two semesters (regardless of location) will only receive one flight allowance.

Yes. There are always additional costs when students study globally. Please be sure to check with your program provider to get full financial details before you send a non-refundable deposit to the program. Although actual costs vary from program to program, and according to students' choices and budgets, all students must anticipate these additional costs:
- Application Fee: Amount: Usually between $20 - $200. When Paid: At the time of application. How Paid: Paid by you directly to your Program Sponsor. (The application fee is non-refundable)
- Program Deposit: Amount: Usually between $250 - $1,000. When Paid: Upon acceptance to your program - usually within 15 days. How Paid: Paid by you directly to your Program Sponsor. A credit for this amount will appear on your Student Account for the semester during which you are studying globally. (The program deposit is non-refundable)
- Personal Expenses: Personal expenses can vary widely, but past students recommend having between $20-60 a week to pay for entertainment, snacks, toiletries, etc.
- Vacation/Travel Expenses: Most students travel during vacation breaks, so you will have to budget for housing, meals, transportation and other personal expenses while you're on the road. Travel can add significantly to your overall budget; past students have spent from $1,000-$5,000 for vacation activities depending on how far they go and how much time they take. All students must count on having some vacation expenses. In many programs, students will be asked to vacate their room during specified holidays and should plan alternative activities.
- Local Transportation: Unlike at Gettysburg College, you may have to commute as part of your global study program. This is very typical for global study programs, and at many other U.S. colleges! You should budget for bus or rail transportation and for occasional taxi fare. The amount will depend on your local travel requirements, but this could be as much as $300 per semester. If you are worried that commuting costs might be a financial burden for you, and you are flexible about where you will live, please specify this on your application form so that every attempt can be made to place you in housing with minimal commuting costs.
- Books, Course Packets, and Other Course Materials: As in the U.S., the cost of books can vary greatly. You should budget between $100-200 per semester for books, but students taking classes in the sciences will pay more (as you would at Gettysburg).
- Additional Flight Costs: The Flight Allowance Credit is meant to help defray the cost of travel to your global study location. If your global study program is not in a major hub within your region of the world, the Flight Allowance may not cover all of your costs. Please take this into consideration when choosing a program and contact CGE if you have any questions about what your flight costs might be.
- Facilities Usage: Unlike most institutions in the U.S., many foreign universities do not own their own athletic, health and entertainment facilities, so they must rent them or charge fees for their use. Depending on your personal interests you may find that you will pay virtually nothing for facilities usage, or $10 or more a week. If you plan to use such facilities, you must plan to pay a nominal fee for their use.
- Immunizations and Medications: To find out what immunizations and medications you may need, consult the Traveler's Health section of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website. Amount: Immunizations and medications can cost between $0.00 and $3,000.00. When Paid: Date of payment can vary but can be paid up to 6 months in advance of departure.
- Health Insurance: Gettysburg offers a health insurance plan for all students. Although having health insurance is mandatory, you can waive out of the Gettysburg Plan if you are covered under another health plan. Further information about this is sent to all students each year from the Financial Services Office.
- Passport/Visa/Photographs: All international programs require a passport, some require a visa. The passport application and all visa applications require photographs. In addition to the fees associated with obtaining a passport, there may also be travel costs and other fees you will be responsible for in order to obtain your visa.
-
All Gettysburg students who participate in one of our non-affiliated global study programs pay the cost of the program directly to the institution sponsoring the program. Students pay no tuition, room or board to Gettysburg during the term studying globally. Institutional aid does not transfer, but Federal aid and, in some cases, State aid does. Students electing to participate in an non-affiliated Global Study program will be billed a Non-Affiliated Global Study Fee (each semester) that covers the administrative services provided by Gettysburg College for the student.
