Detroit

Urban Farming and Economic Justice
Detroit is often portrayed through the lens of economic decline, blight, and population loss. But are these images the full story, or do they miss the grassroots movements and innovations reshaping the city? This project will introduce participants to Detroit’s thriving network of urban farmers, cooperatives, and community organizers who are reimagining economic justice and food sovereignty. They will meet with leaders of local farms that transform vacant lots into sources of fresh produce, organizations that build community-owned businesses, and advocates fighting for equitable access to resources. Participants will also engage in hands-on service with neighborhood farming initiatives, gaining perspective on the role of food systems in community revitalization. While rooted in Detroit, the project includes visits to surrounding neighborhoods to explore the city’s cultural history and public art. Participants will experience Detroit beyond the headlines, discovering how local residents are leading movements toward sustainability, justice, and transformation.
