Lecturer in Mathematics and Mathematics Peer Learning Supervisor

Gettysburg College invites applications for a full-time Lecturer in Mathematics, beginning August 2020. The term of appointment is three years and is renewable. We particularly invite applications from members of any group that has been historically underrepresented in the American academy. Applicants must have a Masters’ degree or Ph.D in one of the mathematical sciences (including mathematics education), or must expect to complete all requirements for the degree by September 2020.

The responsibilities of the position are, first, to teach six courses per academic year, including (but not necessarily limited to) all levels of calculus, linear algebra, and elementary statistics; second, to supervise and enhance the peer-to-peer teaching activities of students in the math department (currently comprising class recitation sessions, drop-in help programs for various courses, and peer homework grading).

The person hired will have the opportunity to shape the mathematics program of an energetic department, to teach a range of undergraduate courses, and to engage students in a variety of mathematical activities. The following are essential: (i) demonstrated success as a teacher, with clear promise of future excellent and innovative teaching in undergraduate mathematics; (ii) an interest in working with students on peer-to-peer teaching activities outside the classroom; and (iii) an interest in working as a teacher in a liberal arts environment. In addition, preference will be given to candidates with clear potential (iv) to integrate their teaching with the promotion of a campus environment in which underrepresented students will thrive and (v) to expand the mathematical expertise and teaching capabilities of the department.
