History

The study of history challenges students to engage many kinds of sources to gain greater understanding of the past. By interpreting and debating incomplete and often contradictory sources, you learn to think critically, to make connections across time and place, to relate specific events to general trends, and to understand change. Comparing different parts of the world in different periods offers insight into the diversity of the human experience and into your own place in the world. The study of history sharpens the mind as it develops habits of informed citizenship.

The expansive history curriculum covers a wide range of periods and developments in the Western and non-Western world, from the 14th century Age of Discovery to the relationship between the U.S.  and the Middle East from the late 1800s to today.

The study of history -- for those who major or minor in history and for those who integrate history courses with other areas of study -- builds a firm foundation for graduate study and for a wide range of careers, because of both the knowledge you gain and the skill at critical inquiry you develop. The study of history has helped students find career success in education, business, research, journalism, high-tech fields, law, government, and many other areas.
