Experience Psychology

Students in the Psychology Department can participate in a variety of endeavors that take place both in and out of the classroom and laboratory. You'll conduct student research, explore internships, and even have the opportunity to study abroad or join the Psi Chi Honor Society. These extended research, fieldwork and academic activities can result in a broader understanding of the study of psychology and the many opportunities it offers. Funding is available to support students' independent research and field experiences.

Study Abroad

With careful planning, psychology majors often enjoy the opportunities offered in the various study abroad programs. The key is to remember that after completing Psychology 101, majors need a minimum of four semesters on campus to complete Psy 205, Psy 305, and two advanced labs, each of which is taken in a different semester.

Advisors can help majors to plan their scheduling and determining if courses taken abroad can count toward the major.

Psi Chi Honor Society

Psi Chi was founded in 1929 for the purposes of “encouraging, stimulating, maintaining excellence in scholarship, and advancing the science of psychology.” Psi Chi is a member of the Association of College Honor Societies and an affiliate of the American Psychological Association and the American Psychological Society.

To qualify for membership in the Gettysburg College chapter of Psi Chi, students must be psychology majors, and have at least a 3.00 GPA overall, as well as a 3.00 GPA in Psychology. Additionally, students need to have completed at least four psychology courses (or have completed three and be enrolled in the fourth).

There are two inductions into Psi Chi during the academic year: one in the fall and one in the spring. Sign-up sheets are distributed in psychology classes in the fall and spring. Interested students can apply for membership consideration, and are contacted by letter if membership requirements are met.
