Many students take advantage of the leadership training and certification opportunities offered by the GLC as they navigate their sociology major and their college experience. Building on the training they obtained, recent sociology students have founded their own identity and interest organizations, including the queer social club Lavender Lounge and the international student-focused Vietnamese Student Association.
The flagship student journal of the social sciences at Gettysburg College, the GSSR, peer reviews and publishes the work of undergraduates from institutions around the US and the world. Because it was developed in and continues to be housed in the sociology department, you have the unique opportunity of serving as a peer reviewer, associate editor, editor, or even managing editor of the journal. If you are interested in work in publishing, higher education, or academia, make time in your schedule to work with the Gettysburg Social Sciences Review.
The student social club for majors and minors, the Sociological Experience, organizes events on campus to help develop community, connect students, and provide space for students to unwind each semester. You can check out our recent events on our departmental Instagram; get in touch with your instructor or advisor about getting involved.
Members of the Sociological Experience and student workers in the department put together a twice-yearly newsletter about students, faculty and alumni achievements called Subculture. Students interested in honing their interview, writing, photography, and professional marketing skills should reach out to the department’s Administrative Assistant, Andrea Switzer, about working on this departmental publication.
