Course Expectations

In writing sociological research papers for class, current students are encouraged to make use of the following resources.

Sociological Resources in Musselman Library
This research guide, curated by library liaison Mary Elmquist, should be your starting point for conducting sociological research. It offers an overview of how to find bibliographic materials in Musselman Library relevant to sociology, with a list of germane social scientific databases and tools for secondary statistical analysis. In addition, you should plan to review guidelines for evaluating digital sources prior to beginning their research project.

Department of Sociology Style Guide
This guide provides information on how to organize and present papers and essays for sociology courses and how to correctly format citations and references. Be sure to check the most recent, updated version of the American Sociological Association (ASA) style guide at the library reference desk before submitting your finalized work to your instructor.

Institutional Review Board
All faculty and students are required to learn about and adhere to standardized guidelines for the ethical treatment of human subjects. Though you will be trained in appropriate research procedures during your research methods courses, you should be sure to review our institutional expectations and requirements regarding social scientific research prior to beginning any course-based, faculty-led, or independent sociological research that will be conducted and completed under the auspices (or with the support of) Gettysburg College.

The Gettysburg Honor Code
All sociology students must adhere to the Gettysburg Honor Code. Students have a responsibility to avoid plagiarism and to closely follow the GenAI guidelines set forth by each individual instructor and the college.
