Declaration of the Music Major or Minor

Because courses in music are sequential and begin in the first semester of a student’s residency on campus, it is important to declare the major/minor formally in a timely manner. This assures that students are assigned the appropriate academic advisor and that they are able to register for required courses, some of which are open only to music majors or minors.

Music Majors (BA, BME/BSME, BM)

Students who have been accepted into the Conservatory for any of the three music degree programs must complete a Declaration of Music Major form; the form is available in the Registrar’s office or in the Conservatory office (not available online). This completed form, on which students indicate the degree program to which they have been accepted (Bachelor of Arts in Music, Bachelor of Music Education, or Bachelor of Music in Performance), should be completed by the end of the drop/add period of the first semester after acceptance and submitted to the Conservatory office academic administrative assistant, who will process the form and forward it to the Registrar.

Music Majors with another (double) major

Students pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Music with a double-major in another field must complete the Declaration of Major form by the end of the drop/add period of the first semester after acceptance (as above).  To declare the other major, students should complete a Declaration of Double Major form. This form must be signed by the Conservatory Director and the Chair of the department housing the other major.

Music Minors

Students who have been accepted into the Conservatory for the music minor must complete a Declaration of Minor form. The form should be completed by the end of the drop/add period of the first semester after acceptance and submitted to the Conservatory office academic administrative assistant, who will process the form and forward it to the Registrar.
