Our Commitment
Gettysburg College is committed to fostering a safe, respectful, and inclusive campus environment. Hazing of any kind is strictly prohibited—whether physical, mental, sexual, or emotional—and is treated as a serious violation of College policy and Pennsylvania law.
What Is Hazing?
Hazing is any intentional, knowing, or reckless act—committed during initiation, affiliation, or membership in a student organization—that causes or risks physical or psychological harm. This includes:
- Physical brutality: beating, branding, calisthenics, exposure to elements, harmful substances.
- Mental harm: sleep deprivation, extreme embarrassment, social exclusion, confinement.
- Forced consumption: alcohol, drugs, or other substances.
- Sexual coercion or brutality.
- Threats or fear of harm.
- Criminal acts under local, state, tribal, or federal law.
Aggravated Hazing
involves serious injury or death and may include forced substance use or reckless disregard for safety.
Organizational Hazing
occurs when a group promotes or facilitates hazing.
Hazing Transparency Report
In compliance with the Federal Stop Campus Hazing Act, the Clery Act, and Pennsylvania’s Timothy J. Piazza Anti-Hazing Law, Gettysburg College publishes this Hazing Transparency Report to help students and families make informed decisions.
