Applied Study Guidelines

  1. All music majors must take 1 hour applied lessons on their principal instrument/voice each semester they are in residence. There is no cost for these lessons.
    • Bachelor of Music students register for the BM sequence (157/8, 257/8, 357/8, 457/8).
    • Bachelor of Music Education and Bachelor of Arts students register for MUSIC 2XX.
  2. All music minors must take 1/2 hour lessons during their first four semesters of participation in the music minor. Music minors register for MUSIC 1XX. There is no cost for these lessons.
    • Music minors who are recipients of the Wagnild Scholarship follow the same guidelines as BA music majors. They will receive 1 hour lessons and have the same requirements and expectations as the BA music major, including juries each semester.
    • Music minors who are recipients of the Wagnild Scholarship should register for lessons at the 2XX level, just as BA music majors.
  3. Music minors who wish to continue applied lessons beyond their 4 semesters of required lessons can do so, on a space-available basis. They should continue to register for MUSIC 1XX (1/2 hour lessons). There is no cost for these lessons.
  4. Bachelor of Music Education students may take applied lessons on a secondary instrument for up to four semesters. This can be four semesters on one instrument, four semesters on four instruments, or any combination. These secondary lessons are on a space-available basis. They should register for MUSIC 1XX. There is no cost for these secondary lessons. This is limited to 4 semesters only.
  5. Music majors (BA, BM) wishing to take secondary lessons can do so, on a space-available basis. They should register for MUSIC 1XX (1/2 hour lessons). This will include BME students after their 4 semesters of secondary lessons at no cost.
    • These lessons carry a fee of $275 per semester.
    • This fee may be waived by the Conservatory Director for performers in areas of high need. Ensemble directors should request this waiver by Thursday of the 1st week of classes.
  6. Gettysburg College students who are not music majors or minors, but who perform in one or more ensembles can take applied lessons on a space-available basis. They should register for MUSIC 1XX (1/2 hour lessons).
    • These lessons carry a fee of $275 per semester.
    • This fee may be waived by the Conservatory Director for performers in areas of high need. Ensemble directors should request this waiver by Thursday of the 1st week of classes.
  7. Students in categories 4, 5, and 6 above may extend their 1/2 lesson to 1 hour by paying an additional $275 per semester. This is strictly on a space-available basis. The additional $275 may not be waived. They should still register for MUSIC 1XX.
  8. Gettysburg College students who are not music majors or minors and do not perform in Conservatory ensembles can take applied lessons strictly on a space-available basis. They should register for MUSIC 1XX (1/2 hour lessons). These lessons carry a fee of $275 per semester. This fee may not be waived.

Note: Applied studios should be filled in descending order. For example, no student (category 7) will be permitted to extend their 1/2 hour lessons to 1 hour until all students in categories 1-6 have been accommodated.
