Institutional Prizes for Written Works

Marion Zulauf Poetry Prize

The Marion Zulauf Poetry Prize was established at the Academy of American Poets by Sander Zulauf '68 in memory of his mother. It is awarded to the Gettysburg College student who writes the winning entry in a poetry contest sponsored by the Department of English.

  • $100 monetary award.

Requirements:

  • Current Gettysburg College students are eligible.
  • No line nor subject matter restrictions.
  • Students may submit up to three poems.
  • Name and contact information should be on a separate cover page.
  • All judging will be completed by an outside judge.
  • Send submissions to Kathy Ambrose at box 397 or drop off submissions at the English Department in Breidenbaugh 314.

Submission Deadline: March 25, 2022.

Stephen Crane Fiction Prizes

There is a monetary award for a first place short story submission of the Stephen Crane Fiction Prize.

  • $100 monetary award

Requirements:

  • One submission per writer.
  • Short story of any length and any genre accepted.
  • Manuscript should be typed, double-spaced, one-sided, stapled in upper left corner.
  • Name and contact information should be on a separate cover page.
  • All judging will be completed by an outside judge.
  • Send submission to Kathy Ambrose at box 397 or drop off submission at the English Department in Breidenbaugh 314.

Submission Deadline: March 25, 2022.

Virginia Woolf Essay Prizes

The Virginia Woolf Essay Prizes were established by the Ralph D. Lindeman Fund and are awarded to the Gettysburg College students who write the winning entries in an essay contest.

  • $100 monetary award

Requirements:

  • Current Gettysburg College students are eligible.
  • One submission per writer.
  • All types of literary non-fiction on any subject will be considered.
  • Limit of 5,000 words per essay. Retain a copy for your records.
  • Manuscript should be typed, double-spaced, one-sided, stapled in upper left corner.
  • Name and contact information should be on a separate cover page.
  • All judging will be completed by an outside judge.
  • Send submission to Kathy Ambrose at box 397 or drop off submission at the English Department in Breidenbaugh 314.

Submission Deadline: March 25, 2022.

Stock Writing Prizes

Established by Earl Kresge Stock '19, awarded to the three students who write those classroom papers judged to be best in the areas of humanities, sciences, and social sciences.

  • Monetary award provided from an endowment fund.

Requirements:

  • Nominations are made by faculty members.
  • Prizes are presented at Spring Honors Day.

Submissions will be requested from faculty members at the beginning of the spring semester.
