Internships

Some of our students obtain sociology related internships through faculty members in our Department. Most, however, work with the Center for Career Development to research and apply for internships (the center has access to information, including databases, on internships suitable to various disciplines). Internships allow our students to gain invaluable professional training and hands-on experience applying what they learn in classes to real-life situations.

To earn credit towards the major, see the guidelines on how to design an Individualized Study (SOC 450) that corresponds with an internship.

Here’s what some of our recent majors have done as interns:

  • Courtney Small (class of 2009): In the spring of 2009, Courtney was an intern at the American Cancer Society in Harrisburg, PA. Her direct responsibilities as Workplace Wellness Intern included providing support for the planning and implementation of community cancer initiatives, promoting organizational improvements for programs specific to each community site, serving as liaison to clients, and ensuring the American Cancer Society’s branding standards are met on all program initiatives.

  • Ryan Dunn (class of 2007):During the summer of 2006, Ryan interned with the Lawrence Township Police department in New Jersey. Some of the activities included shadowing patrolling officers, observing court activities and crime investigation, helping out with the Youth Police Academy (a week-long camp for the town’s youth), and educating youth (ages 5-7) at the annual Safety Town camp about laws and the importance of safety.

  • Dan Monahan (class of 2007): Dan interned at the Corporate Partnerships department with the Miami Heat. His primary role was to help in the development process of the “Sponsorships” link for the Heat.com home page. This included researching other organizations’ websites, arranging a Powerpoint PDF for the link, and working with the IT department in getting the page on the Internet. Dan has also helped with bringing more adaptable advertising technology to American Airlines Arena, and in creating new and exciting advertising opportunities for their technology.
