Dear Class of 2020 graduates and families,
I’m writing today with an update about your Commencement ceremony. In November, we communicated that our plan was to celebrate your Commencement on Sunday, May 16. Over the past several months, we have reflected on a May Commencement and have come to the judgment to host your Commencement ceremony on Sunday, September 26, of Homecoming Weekend.
I realize that moving your ceremony date yet again may cause you some frustration. On behalf of our Commencement Committee, I know how much you have been looking forward to celebrating this special occasion alongside your classmates, family, and loved ones. We share in that excitement.
Given that the pandemic continues to significantly impact every aspect of our planning and, in turn, the quality of experience we can offer you at this time, and other logistical considerations specific to the College, we are confident that shifting your Commencement ceremony to Homecoming Weekend will allow us to gather together safely, with fewer restrictions. This move to Homecoming will also provide you—as recent graduates of the College—a variety of other activities to participate in while on campus and, through that, to enliven and enrich your celebration.
Together, we are committed to providing you with a Commencement worthy of all that you achieved here as a student—and I know that your one-of-a-kind ceremony, set against the backdrop of autumn leaves on our picturesque campus, with Gettysburgians from all class years cheering you on as you cross the stage, will be a celebration unlike any in our storied history.
I will be in touch with you in the coming months to share details as we finalize our Commencement planning.
