If a parent did not file a 2021 Federal Tax Return, and their 2023-24 FAFSA was selected for Federal Financial Aid Verification, they must provide a "Verification of Non-Filing Letter." This document can only be provided directly by the IRS.
If both parent(s) did not file a federal tax return in 2021, a separate letter must be requested for each parent.
If one parent filed a 2021 tax return but the other did not, the non-filer must request the “Verification of Non-Filing Letter” from the IRS.
Step 1: Request a “Verification of Non-Filing Letter” from the IRS by one of the following two methods:
- Get Transcript Online at irs.gov/transcript . This can only be used if you can confirm a credit card account, auto loan, mortgage, home equity loan or line of credit.
- Fax or mail Form 4506-T (page 2 of this document) to the IRS with item 7- Verification of Non-Filing selected. This will be mailed to you approximately ten business days after the IRS receives your Form 4056-T.
If you are not eligible to use Option 1, you MUST submit the Form 4506-T. In this case, you cannot request a “Verification of Non-Filing” via any other method, including the IRS’ 800 number or the online “Get Transcript by Mail” option.
On Form 4506-T, Question 9 (Year or Period Requested), please put 12/31/2021.
Step 2: Once you have received the “Verification of Non-Filing Letter” from the IRS:
- Keep a copy for you records.
- Submit a copy to the Gettysburg College Office of Financial Aid.
