Recital and Capstone Requirements by Degree

The following guidelines apply to all students, regardless of degree program or type of recital:

Bachelor of Music

Bachelor of Music Junior Recital

  • 25 minutes of music (30 minutes maximum, including all transitions)
  • Junior Recital is required for the Bachelor of Music degree
  • The BM Junior recital may substitute for the end-of-semester jury at the discretion of the applied teacher, area coordinator, and recital panel.

Bachelor of Music Senior Recital

  • 50-60 minutes of music (75 minutes maximum, including all transitions)
  • Senior recital is required for the Bachelor of Music degree
  • Bachelor of Music students do not register for MUSIC 456; the junior and senior recitals are included in the applied study sequence for Bachelor of Music Students

Bachelor of Music Education

Music education students perform a degree recital which may be given in the junior year (fall or spring) or the senior year (fall) prior to student teaching.

  • 25-35 minutes (45 minutes maximum, including transitions)
  • Music education degree recitals may extend to 60 minutes (including transitions) by formal request from the applied instructor to the Conservatory Director and with approval of music faculty (note: approved request for this extension should be attached to the initial recital proposal)
  • Music education students do not register for MUSIC 456, but must be registered for applied lessons in the recital semester.

Bachelor of Arts, Music Major

The Bachelor of Arts student has several options for fulfilling their capstone in the music major. Options include a traditional performance recital, a composition recital, a combined (blended) recital, or they may elect to write a thesis and/or give a presentation in combination with a separate public summative performance.

Bachelor of Arts Performance Recital

  • 40-50 minutes of music (60 minutes maximum, including all transitions)
  • Register for MUSIC 456 as well as applied lessons during the recital semester (concurrent registration)

Bachelor of Arts Composition Recital

  • 45 minutes minimum (60 minutes maximum of original compositions/arrangements) in public performance
  • Must include summative component (e.g. program notes)
  • Register for MUSIC 456 as well as applied lessons during the recital semester (concurrent registration)

Bachelor of Arts Combined Recital

  • 30 minutes of music performance (including all transitions)
  • 30 minutes of other summative activity (lecture, conducting, composition, research paper, integrated project with another major, or other activity approved by the applied teacher as part of the recital proposal)
  • Register for MUSIC 456 as well as applied lessons during the recital semester (concurrent registration)

Bachelor of Arts Thesis and/or Presentation Capstone

See the BA Capstone section of this handbook for more information on this option. This option does not include a traditional recital.

All BA students with a major in music electing this option must give a public summative presentation of musical performance on the primary instrument/voice (30 minutes of solo and/or chamber music) during their junior or senior year, following the guidelines for the BM Junior Recital. As this presentation is not part of the senior capstone - for example, the student is writing a musicological thesis as their capstone project - this performance requirement does not contribute toward the capstone grade.
