Applied Music Juries

Performance juries are held at the end of each semester during final exams week.

Who performs a jury?

  • All first-year students, fall semester sophomores, and upper class students enrolled in Applied Study at the 200-level OR in the BM Applied sequence (X57/X58) who have not performed a half or full recital during the semester must perform a jury.

  • All Wagnild Scholars, regardless of degree program or major, must perform a jury in their principal applied area.

  • All music minors and non-music majors in their fourth semester of study must perform a jury.

  • Music minors not in their fourth semester of study will have a performance evaluation in lieu of a jury, i.e. a graded performance in studio class. The same rubric will be used for these evaluations as is used for juries.

  • Students performing a half or full recital will be assigned a faculty panel to evaluate the recital. This takes the place of a jury for the recital semester. Learn more about recitals and recital planning.

Jury Procedures

  • All students performing a jury must sign up on the appropriate sheet located on the board outside the Conservatory Office in order to have your jury scheduled.

  • The jury grade will constitute 1/3 of the applied semester grade.

  • Students must submit all forms, along with copies of the compositions to be performed, to the Conservatory office by the deadlines published each semester.

  • Failure to submit an exam schedule and/or completed jury forms and music to the Conservatory office by the deadlines published each semester will result in an automatic 5 point deduction from a student’s jury score for each infraction.

Prepared piece(s) and/or etudes, as well as scales and sight-reading, will constitute an examination for instrumental juries. Voice students should refer to the Voice Proficiency Guidelines for requirements.

At the completion of each academic year, the progress of each student will be reviewed by the faculty. If insufficient progress is noted, the student will be notified in writing.

Jury Forms

Students preparing to present an Applied Music Jury should download and complete the forms appropriate for their applied area of study.

These forms must be completed and returned to the Conservatory Office along with copies of music to be presented. Failure to submit completed jury forms and music to the Conservatory office by the deadlines published each semester will result in an automatic 5 point deduction from a student’s jury score for each infraction.

Note: While music majors in their fourth semester of applied study would typically complete the Applied Music Assessment (sophomore assessment) described elsewhere in this handbook, as of January 2023 the Applied Assessment has been suspended until it can be fully revised. During the suspension, music majors in their fourth semester of study should complete a standard jury.
